The people of Perish wear their souls on the outside of their bodies in the shape of different talking/telepathically linked animals. Whether they are real animals or mythical beasts, or even real animals reshaped to fit the person they portray. Souls can be any size, any color, with strange adaptations, it all depends on the person. Souls always carry some sort of characteristic from their other half like the same color eyes, a unique marking, etc. The person has their Soul as soon as they are born, it bursts from their baby chest in a bright blue light, and a tiny creature follows them around until they are either forcibly separated or they both die. Due to the nature of the souls close proximity to their person, the relationship is called being 'Tethered', subsequently those who have lost their soul are referred to as being 'Severed'.
A person's Soul ages with them, starting out as a tiny baby creature and eventually turning into an adult. A Soul shows every physical injury their person gets, however with just a small amount of time, Souls heal and will continue to heal until there is barely a scar even if their Tethered has a horrible scar reminding them of whatever happened.
Soul's are deeply connected to their Tethered, a connection that goes both ways, those who have become Severed usually start to go mad soon after. While if the Tethered dies so does the Soul. There are a few cases where a child has been born without a Soul. However these children often adopt a pet that they continuously keep with them so that they fit in, so as to not draw unwanted attention to themselves. It is not looked upon kindly when a child is born without a Soul, it is often looked at like a mutation or some sort of punishment to their parents.
Souls are the source of magic in Perish, though no one quite understands how it is possible that they bring out such energy; more info can be found on magical abilities here.
